Safe Space

To feel truly safe, we cannot be alone. We need our safe space. Whether it be a literal place, an object, or your person, we need them to feel truly safe. To you, my safe space might seem cold, but it brings me the warmest of cold feelings. I love the cold. To you, my safe space might seem dark, but it brings me the brightest of dark feelings. I love the dark. And to you, my safe space might seem scary, but it brings me the safest of scared feelings. In my safe space, I am a confusing complexion of cold and warm, bright and dark, scared and safe. I love it.

Giving Up A Dream

We all have dreams. Not the kind we forget every morning, but the ones we follow. The ones we chase. The ones that occupy our thoughts in the most inconvenient of times. If life was without our dreams, we would have nothing to strive for. Sometimes, though, we have that one unachievable dream. The dream that will never get closer no matter how fast we chase, or how hard we imagine. Our lives become centred around this one dream. Every minute of every day of every month is spent wishing and hoping for that dream to come true even though we know it never will. But by this point, it’s too late. That dream is all we have left and, although we know we need to, we can’t seem to give it up. It’s always there, even if supressed. It’s always there, even if momentarily forgotten. It’s always there, even if we try as hard as we possibly can to replace it. It’s always there. Giving up this dream is what we need to set ourselves free, but we would rather chain ourselves to it for life than lose it.

I had been meaning to go out and capture the turn of the season, as autumn gradually overcame summer. Unusually, there hadn’t been many colourful orange leaves around, so I was grateful to find these vibrant leaves somewhat hidden amongst some brambles, despite them being slightly broken. The most beautiful things always are though, no?

Almost castle-like, this gothic building stands majestically as one of London’s many beautifully ancient structures.

This fleeting bit of golden hour light caught my eye - contrasting so starkly with the dark, moody foreground of corrugated buildings. These buildings, along with the powerlines, also contrast with the elements of nature in this photograph, and it is this contrast that I am so fond of.

Captured from the far north of Iceland, the stunning aurora borealis danced elusively as a curtain of ethereal light. filling the night sky with their swirling beauty. Their enchanting dance could be seen despite the seemingly insignificant clouds, leaving me enraptured. The vast landscape of massive mountains appears as a mere supporting act to the auroras.

Time

Time is the one dimension of the universe whose direction we are constrained by. Sometimes we may be grateful for the reliable progression of time; It moves us away from the past, taking us away from difficult moments. Sometimes, though, it is the progression of time of which we are most afraid. We long for the marching of time to stop and allow us to catch up. Things may happen too quickly and things may move too fast, but as the saying goes, ‘Time and tide wait for no man’.

As with most of my photography adventures in Dubai, I walked for quite some time in the dreadful heat of the middle eastern Winter through a construction site, albeit, a more complete one - Dubai Water Canal. Despite it being slightly cooler, it was still very hot and it was quite a struggle to reach Tolerance Bridge. I had seen it before in photographs and I knew that it was somewhere I wanted to visit. After climbing the few stairs to reach the top of the bridge, I wandered around for minutes searching for a composition. I couldn't find one that did justice to the arch of the bridge. After walking across it to the other side, however, I turned around and saw a similar view to this photograph. I set up my tripod and stood in the frame, admiring the arch of Tolerance Bridge. This photograph is a personal favourite of mine and, like all of my photographs, it has a story to accompany it.

After a difficult journey through sand and rubble, I reached one of Dubai's abandoned projects - Al Jaddaf Walk. The temperatures were scorching; the trees had all unfortunately died; there was construction dust everywhere. Nevertheless, I waited for the Sun to set and I was presented with a glorious sunset. A vertical panoramic image captured these two birds soaring above the skyline of Downtown Dubai. Despite the hardships, I went home with this beautiful photograph.

The stunning Andromeda Galaxy lies 2.5 million light years away from our home planet. This image consists of over 8 hours of data captured over multiple nights bringing out the faint dust lanes in the spiral galaxy. The bright streak to the top-right of M31 is a meteor from the Perseids meteor shower which streaked through the frame!
